coral shorts.

shirt: Forever 21 (thrifted, similar, last seen here) // shorts: Forever 21 // flats: Payless // necklace: Forever 21 (old, similar) // watch: Michael Kors

Happy Monday, hope everyone had a great weekend!

This is a simple outfit I wore over the weekend. I'm normally not a huge fan of shorts...it's so hard finding a pair that super short yet aren't bordering on "mom shorts." This pair I found at Forever 21 seem to be the perfect fit, and they're less than $15! Stock up, they come in a few different colors...and knowing F21 they won't last long!

hello, summer.

Happy Friday! Summer is officially here so go out there and enjoy a sun-filled weekend! Here are a few of my recent finds and faves!
  • If you haven't checked out One Fine Day, do it now! Filled with color and classic pieces, Ashley's style is so perfect, I have some serious outfit envy!
  • If you love top knots as much as I do (such a life saver in the morning), you'll love these ideas!
  • The fourth is next Friday and I've always wanted to try my hand at these fun sparkler photos!
  • This amazing artist takes "upcycling" to a whole new level! Note to self, start collecting chopsticks!
  • Check out this beautiful dress Julia was rocking earlier this week...love the colorful details!
  • Yup, guilty...I think it's safe to say my sweet tooth is out. of. control.

hello sailor.

blouse: Target // jeans: H+M // flats: Banana Republic (similar) // necklace: Forever 21 (almost identical)
watch: Michael Kors // lip color: Maybelline Coral Crush

While I've always been a big fan of the nautical look, I've always steered clear of sail boat prints for fear they look a little too juvenile or 'kitschy.' However, that all changed when I stumbled across this sail boat blouse at Target...not only did I love the color and shape, but it came in petite! The tiny sail boat print is so subtle, it almost passes for polka dots until you get a closer look. Paired with a modern pearl necklace and a top knot, it makes a perfect outfit for a casual day at the office!

How would you wear this nautical sail boat blouse?

20 under 20: best budget beauty buys

I'll be the first to admit I'm a bargain shopper. While I love brands like J. Crew, Banana Republic, and Kate Spade, I hate paying full price (especially when items get marked down so quickly and can often be found on sites like eBay and Poshmark for much less). However, one of my favorite things is find lower priced items (Target, Forever 21, Old Navy, etc) that look nearly identical to some of their higher priced inspirations...and if that interests you take a look at my "this vs. that series" above :)

Likewise, I tend to follow this same train of thought when it comes to my beauty routine. While I do splurge here and there on a few beauty items (namely my Stila Illuminating Foundation and Mac Sheer Select Pressed Powder), most of my purchases can be found at Target, Walgreens, and similar drugstores.

Here is a list of 20 of my favorite budget beauty finds, all priced below $20! I use each and every one of these items on a regular basis, so feel free to shoot me an email or comment below with any questions!
  1. Trader Joe's Coconut Body Butter ($4.99) - This is a recent discovery of mine and IT. IS. AMAZING. Super moisturizing yet not at all greasy, it has a great coconut scent so no need for a separate fragrance!
  2. Elf Jumbo Gloss Stick in Movie Star ($1.00) - This has become my everyday lip color. I have one in my clutch, one at home, one in my desk at work, and one in my car. It leaves you with the slightest hint of color and best part....it's only a buck!
  3. Sephora Collection Blush in Romantic Rose ($15.00) - I've been using this blush for a few years now and it's great...the perfect shade of rosy pink. Super flattering in the winter as well as with my summer tan.
  4. Sonia Kashuk Brow Kit ($9.99) - A makeup artist friend introduced me to this brow kit years ago and I've used it ever since. It goes on a bit sheer so you're left with natural looking results. My only complaint about this brow kit is that you're left with three other colors you don't need but at only ten bucks, that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.
  5. Blistex Lip Medex ($2.99) - I've been using this lip balm since before I was wearing makeup! It's been my go to night lip balm for years...I love the tingly feeling when you out it on and you wake up with healthy, moisturized lips.
  6. Maybelline Great Lash Mascara in Blackest Black ($4.99) - The all time classic mascara, this is my favorite mascara. If it ain't broke, don't fit it!
  7. Elf Wet Gloss Clear Mascara ($1.00) - I use this to set my brows after I use the Sonia Kashuk bow kit...and on the days I'm not wearing makeup but want to tame my brows!
  8. Loreal Sublime Self Tanning Gel ($8.99) - I've tried my share of self tanners, some with disastrous results but this is by far the best one I've used. It's tinted with bronzer so you're able to see any streaks and blend before it dries. It goes on a little sheer so you can build up your color over the course of a few days if needed.
  9. Milani Runway Eyeshadow in Golden Touch ($6.99) - This shimmery gold eyeshadow is perfect to layer over your everyday eyeshadows or to wear alone for a subtle look.
  10. Rimmel Natural Bronzer in Natural Bronze ($5.99) - This is my go to bronzer all year long for a little color across my cheeks, forehead, and chin. Very natural looking!
  11. Trader Joe's Coconut Oil ($5.99) - A friend of mine from work introduced me to this a few months back...I've primarily been using it as a makeup remover and it's fantastic...and much cheaper than some of the other options out there! Coconut oil has soooo many other uses though, read here for more!
  12. Elf Liquid Eyeliner ($1.00) - Probably my favorite item in my makeup bag, this is the best liquid eye line I've ever used...and I've tried just about every one out there. It goes on so incredibly smooth, which makes the application process much easier!
  13. Aussie Hi Hold + Hi Shine Spray - ($2.99) - I use this daily to take away any fly aways when my hair is down, to hold my beachy waves, or smooth my top knot. It says "hi hold," but I find it to be more flexible, which I prefer.
  14. Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Fire + Ice ($4.99) - I own probably 5 or 6 shades of this lipstick, though my favorite is currently Fire + Ice. It's a reddish/orange poppy shade, very similar to the classic red you might see on a model in a J. Crew catalog!
  15. St. Ives Sensitive Skin Apricot Scrub ($3.99) - I've heard multiple theories that you should exfoliate/you shouldn't exfoliate...but I'm a firm believer in exfoliating a few times a week. This sensitive skin version is a little more gentle and can be used daily.
  16. Dove Sensitive Skin Beauty Bar ($1.99) - This is the soap I use to wash my face and body...I have really sensitive skin and this is pretty much the only soap I've ever used!
  17. Clearasil Daily Pore Cleansing Pads ($3.99) - Whenever I feel a blemish coming on, I use one of these pads all over my face after I shower...they're great at drying up any current blemishes too.
  18. Neutrogena Healthy Skin Face Lotion ($10.99) -  For years I used the Dove Sensitive Skin Face Lotion...and then it was discontinued (seriously Dove, WHY???). Thankfully, I discovered this Neutrogena version and it's a great replacement...and it contains SPF 15!
  19. Mac Eyeshadows in Vanilla and Cork ($15.00) - You probably doesn't think "budget" when you think of Mac, but their eyeshadows are actually pretty affordable and they stay on longer than any other I've tried. These two shades are my favorites for everyday, topped off with my shimmery Milani gold powder!
  20. New York Color Quick Dry Nail Polish ($1.99) - I saved the best for last! NYC nail polishes have been around forever...and these quick dry polishes are THE BEST. Seriously, the go on super shiny, dry in less than a minute, and come in so many great colors. I know everyone is partial to brands like Essie and OPI (and no disrespect to them), but this nail polish is just as good...dare I say better?!?
Well, that's my list...I hope you've found it helpful! Happy Monday!

lady in red.

blouse: J. Crew Factory (similar, similar) // pants: Gap (no longer available in red, similar)
heels: Ann Taylor (similar budget friendly option) // watch: Michael Kors // bracelets: F21

Peanut butter and jelly. Peas and carrots. Beyonce and Jay Z. Red and polka dots.

See what I'm getting at here? Red and polka dots are a classic combo! They just fit together and they're one of my all time favorite combinations. Bonus...you can wear them all year long!

Ladies, what are some of your all time favorite fashion combinations?

all black everything.

blouse: H+M // skirt: H+M (old, similar) // heels: Nordstrom Rack (similar) // watch: Michael Kors
necklace: Forever 21 (old, similar) // lipstick: Revlon Fire + Ice // nails: NYC Park Ave

Happy Monday! So, true story...I'd been searching for a black pleated skirt for quite awhile and I finally found one last fall...in the kids school uniform section at H+M! Yes, that's right, this skirt is a little girls uniform skirt (and it was $10!!!) and I LOVE IT!

I've probably mentioned it before, but from time to time I'll browse the girls section at Target, H+M, etc and sometimes I'll find some cute tops, or skirts but this is by far my best find from the girls department. Hey, at 5'2" no one every looks at me funny when I'm browsing with the 'tweens!

Ladies, if you're looking for a simple pleated skirt (and full skirts are so popular right now) check out the girls department. You might be surprised what you'll find! :)

orange stripes.

shirt: Loft (old) // pants: Banana Republic // heels: Anne Klein via eBay (similar) // watch: Michael Kors

Orange seemed to be a reoccurring theme this week! I got this orange striped blouse last summer at Loft...and I loved it so much that I also got it in b+w stripes. It's super versatile and I've been able to wear it with slacks to work as you see above, tucked into a pencil skirt, and dressed down with jeans and flats. Unfortunatley they didn't bring it back this summer. I don't know about you ladies, but I haven't found a lot of pieces I love this summer, so I haven't bought much the last couple of months.

Have any of you found any must-have pieces recently?

Below you can see a few options I tried in order to stay warm...the mornings are still a little brisk out here in the Bay Area! I ended up going with my favorite utility jacket on the right...which one would you have chosen?

LEFT - Blazer: Old Navy (almost identical) // MIDDLE - Cardigan: H+M // RIGHT - Jacket: H+M

Have a great weekend!

navy + orange.

blouse: Target (very old, similar, in petites too!) // skirt: thrifted (similar) // heels: Anne Klein via eBay (similar) // watch: Michael Kors // bracelet: Urban Peach Boutique // nails: Sinful Colors in Endless Blue

Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a fun filled weekend!

I think Monday mornings call for a bit of color. I decided to go with orange and navy this morning...the perfect way to liven up an office outfit! I think it's safe to say I'm not going blend in with the masses today!

How do you brighten up your office wear?

hello, june.

Whew, what a week...I'm sooo glad it's Friday! I've been crazy busy at work all week and I plan on closing my computer this afternoon and not even thinking about work until 8am Monday morning!

Now that we're officially in the month of June, I thought I'd add to my series of free downloads and give you all another iPhone wallpaper specific to the month of June! Please feel free to download and share!

With that, I'll leave you with a few of my favorite finds I've come across over the past couple of weeks. I hope you enjoy and have a great sunshine-filled weekend!

  • I've seen this mural in just about every NYC based fashion blog and now I finally know who the artist is! Read all about Maya Hayuk's "Chem Trails" mural and check out some of her other amazing pieces of work!
  • I know I'm not the only one who has a love/hate relationship with their heels...and I'm pretty sure you'll appreciate The 6 Terrible Stages of Wearing High Heels as much as I did!
  • Today is National Donut Day, so consider it a cheat day and check out some of Oh Happy Day's ways to celebrate this sugary holiday!
  • Did anyone see Jessica wearing the most beautiful dress this week? I'm in love...now to find a wallet friendly version!
  • Lastly, summer is the perfect time for weekend road trips, and if you live in the San Francisco Bay Area like I do, there are so many options to get away for the weekend. Summer is here so get out there and enjoy it!

tweed skirt // two ways

shirt: Target (similar) // skirt: Target via eBay (similar) // necklace: Urban Peach Boutique (similar)
heels: Jessica Simpson // watch: Michael Kors

I missed out on this skirt at Target a couple of seasons back, so I went my usual route and found it on eBay! While I love the colors in this skirt, the fit is a little off...the waist is huge and will definitely require some alterations.

The tweed fabric is great and seems much higher end than Target (very similar to a No. 2 J. Crew skirt from last year), and is easy to pair with several items in my closet. Here I've paired it with a mint striped boat neck tee above, and a coral cardigan below. I chose nude heels for both looks as the skirt is so busy itself, but I'm thinking a pink heel might work as well?

cardigan: H+M // camisole: F21 // necklace: F21 (old, similar) // skirt and heels detailed above

I'm curious ladies, what would you pair this skirt with?

thin mint cupcakes.

It's been quite awhile since I've done a recipe or DIY post so I figured it was long overdue. So, I may have ordered an entire case of Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies earlier this spring...and every time I open the pantry there they are. Staring at me. I figured I should try and use them and get them out of the house...so here you go, Thin Mint Cupcakes! I found tons of recipes on Pinterest, but this one from Your Cup of Cake is my favorite...I made just a few slight modifications...

Thin Mint Cupcakes

Chocolate Cake Ingredients:
  • 1 box devil's food cake mix
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Thin Mint Frosting Ingredients:
  • 1 cup butter, room temperature (NOT melted)
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons peppermint extract
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 10 Thin Mint cookies, crushed
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • Chocolate sprinkles
  • Extra Thin Mints for decoration (cut in half)

Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line pans with cupcake liners (I used green to scream 'MINT!')
  2. Pour cake mix into a small bowl and set aside
  3. In a large bowl, combine eggs, butter, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth
  4. Stir in cake mix
  5. Fill cupcake liners 2/3 full and bake for approximately 18 minutes, or until an toothpick or knife comes out clean
  6. Let cool completely
  7. On to the frosting!
  8. Using an electric mixer, beat butter for 2 minutes
  9. Add cocoa powder, vanilla extract, peppermint extract, and sour cream and beat again
  10. Add crushed cookies, and add in powdered sugar (one cup at a time) until frosting is stiff enough to make peaks
  11. Using a frosting bag or gun, pipe frosting onto cooled cupcakes
  12. Top with sprinkles and extra cookies!

And voila, my favorite cookies are now my new favorite cupcakes! Enjoy!

orange crush.

J. Crew dress (similar) // Urban Peach Boutique necklace // Franco Sarto heels (similar)
Michael Kors watch // Sinful Colors Endless Blue nails

Once again, I"m wearing a J. Crew Allie dress, this time in orange (or Modern Red as they call it). Last seen here, I have this dress in three colors and I. LOVE. IT.  Seriously, this dress looks good on any body type, and you can wear this dress all year long! See how I've styled it through the seasons here and here.

Bring back the Allie dress, J. Crew!!!
